Superintendent outlines new mandatory-reporter duties for board under Senate Bill 1437
Summary
District staff told the Glendale Elementary School District Governing Board that Senate Bill 1437 names school board members as mandatory reporters and the district is coordinating training through VECTOR to meet the new requirement.
Superintendent Segata Jones informed the Glendale Elementary School District Governing Board on May 22 that Senate Bill 1437 now lists school board members as mandatory reporters who must notify law enforcement of suspected child abuse or neglect and complete required training.
Segata Jones said the district is coordinating with VECTOR and its safe-schools platform to provide the updated training language and materials. "We have reached out to VECTOR to see if they have updated yet the new language," district staff said; the district requested the updated modules by June 30 so it can distribute training to employees and board members.
District staff member Miss Valadez (spelled Valdez in one instance on the record) said VECTOR is gathering language from other states and the district has asked for clarification on whether board members will report directly to the state board of education or whether reporting will route through district processes. The board asked questions and expressed that several members already believed they performed mandatory-reporting functions.
Why it matters: Placement of board members on the mandatory-reporter list creates a new compliance duty for individual board members and the district. The board is awaiting final training language and guidance from VECTOR and other state resources to understand specific reporting channels and recordkeeping requirements.
Next steps: District staff will provide updated training materials once VECTOR finalizes the language and will report back to the board with implementation timing.
