Jeffrey Brown, deputy director of the Onslow County Department of Social Services, said the county will observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Thursday, June 26 at the Government Center in Jacksonville from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"It is June 26," Brown said. He described a program of speakers and resources intended to raise awareness of elder abuse, neglect and financial exploitation.
Brown named expected participants and activities. He said "Senator Lozara is going to be there as our keynote speaker," and that Onslow County District Attorney Ernie Lee, Sheriff Thomas and Onslow County Chairman Foster also planned remarks. He said the Clowdr Group, a documentary film company from California that has been producing short films about elder abuse and adult protective services, will screen films and host talk-back sessions.
Brown described financial exploitation as a growing, large-scale problem and urged community members to check on older neighbors. "If you know an elder person here in Onslow County, check-in on them. Go say hello. Spend some time with them," he said, adding loneliness and isolation can increase vulnerability to scams and fraud.
Brown directed listeners to the Onslow County website for details on the Department of Social Services and Adult Protective Services. He said vendors, information tables and food trucks will be at the June 26 event, and that attendees can expect resource materials and door prizes.
Ending note: The county recommended that residents who want to help or learn more visit the Onslow County Department of Social Services page for event information and resources.
