Miami‑Dade County’s Appropriations Committee approved a resolution authorizing the Department of Transportation and Public Works to implement major bus‑network service changes on or after July 21, 2025, including the addition of a South Quarter Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line, the department said.
Joffre Diaz, interim director of the Miami‑Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works, told the committee the South Quarter BRT will be funded by the county’s half‑cent transit surtax and will not require general‑fund support. Diaz said the department has realized savings from earlier lineup changes and route conversions.
‘‘We have realized a savings of $5,300,000 with the changes that we're introducing with MetroLink, which we are taking some routes that are now, on demand service and taking them into fixed routes based on on the success of those routes. That has a cost of $2,000,000 So therefore, the savings in this is $3,300,000 towards operating,’’ Diaz said.
Committee members asked whether the change was part of the county’s Better Bus Network planning; Diaz said the South Quarter was not previously included in the Better Bus Network but is now being introduced as part of the current lineup changes. The committee approved item 1G1 by roll call; the clerk recorded the vote as 4–0.
Ending: Sponsors and staff hailed the item as a network improvement and a funding‑neutral expansion of service due to the surtax funding; the committee recorded unanimous approval and advanced the Department of Transportation and Public Works’ authority to implement the changes.
