East Aurora board names Dr. Bob Halverson superintendent; outgoing Dr. Norell to step down

The East Aurora School District 131 Board of Education voted on March 17 to appoint Dr. Bob Halverson as the district’s next superintendent and approved an amendment to the current superintendent contract.

Board members approved the appointment by roll-call vote. The board then voted to amend the contract of the current superintendent; that amendment passed after a roll call in which one member recorded an abstention.

Outgoing Superintendent Dr. Norell addressed the board and community and said he will be moving to the community where he will take a new superintendent role. He thanked the board and partners for seven years of support and urged the board to remain supportive of the superintendent role.

Dr. Halverson, who earlier in the meeting was featured in a district video and delivered prepared remarks, said he was honored and described his personal connection to the district. "If I could pick any spot in the state of Illinois with a pin, any spot in the entire country with a pin and put it on a map to become a superintendent, it would be in East Aurora," he said. In his remarks Halverson listed priorities including continued academic growth, building a culture of collaboration and trust, and expanding pathways to be college- or career-ready.

Union president Becky Ryro spoke after the vote, thanked Dr. Norell for his service and welcomed Dr. Halverson, saying the union is ready to collaborate with the new superintendent.
