On March 21, 2025, the Maui County Council adopted two ceremonial resolutions recognizing Maui student wrestlers who won state titles at the 2025 Hawaii High School Athletic Association state wrestling championships in Honolulu.
The resolutions — Resolution 25-81 and Resolution 25-82 — congratulate multiple student-athletes from Kamehameha Schools Maui and H.P. Baldwin High School. Council members moved and seconded both measures and approved them by voice votes (each recorded as eight ayes, one excused for the first resolution; the second resolution carried with eight ayes, zero nos, one excused).
The council read the full text of the resolutions into the record. Resolution 25-81 recognized Mika Labuanan of Kamehameha Schools Maui and Jalia Miguel of H.P. Baldwin High School for multi-year state titles and noted career records included in the resolution. Resolution 25-82 honored Blake Abernathy of Kamehameha Schools Maui and Te Ata Mata'afa Grove, Pita Takafua and Bryson Adrick of H.P. Baldwin High School for their state championships and described their achievements at Maui Interscholastic League and state tournaments.
Several student-athletes and coaches attended the meeting and spoke briefly to the council. H.P. Baldwin senior Julia (Jalia) Miguel thanked the council and her family, saying, "I would like to thank everyone who played a big part in my high school career." Baldwin junior Te Ata Mata'afa Grove said the medal "means so much to me" and pledged to keep training for future state championships. Kamehameha Schools junior Blake Abernathy thanked coaches and families for their support.
Coach Grant, who addressed the council on behalf of the group, said wrestling athletes "don't do it for the recognition" but for the life lessons the sport provides. After remarks, athletes and coaches came forward for photographs with council members.
The council directed certified copies of each resolution be transmitted to the athletes, their coaches, school athletic directors and other officials listed in the resolutions.
Less critical details: the resolutions note the championships took place at the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu and list upcoming national or international events for some athletes. The council recessed briefly to allow photos and remarks from the student-athletes before proceeding with other business.
