The California State Assembly on March 6 passed Assembly Bill 437, which adds sports-related injuries — including head injuries — and other medical issues to the information submitted by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) in its periodic report to the Legislature and governor.
Assemblymember Lackey said CIF currently submits a report every seven years and that recent research on long-term impacts of athlete injuries motivated the change. Lackey described the bill as requiring the CIF report to include “information on sports related head injuries and other injuries and medical problems.”
The Assembly adopted the measure on a roll call, Ayes 59, Noes 0. Lackey urged colleagues for their “aye” vote and framed the bill as a step to improve data availability on student-athlete health and safety.
The remarks on the floor focused on the CIF reporting requirement, the seven-year reporting cycle, and the inclusion of head-injury data; the bill text, any implementation schedule, required data fields and fiscal effects were not detailed during the floor presentation.
