Members of the Bayonne Historic Commission discussed several items related to local interpretation and commemoration, including a possible nomination for Mount Carmel Church’s interior, an updated booklet of Andrew A. Walsh paintings, and how Lenape archaeological finds from light-rail construction might be displayed for the city’s upcoming 250th observances.
Commissioners asked staff to examine Mount Carmel Church’s interior artwork and stained-glass windows to determine whether interior elements support a landmark nomination; the meeting record identifies Franz Mayer windows in the church and notes previously compiled research by local authors that documents the building’s artwork. The commission directed two members to inspect the church interior and contact a person who worked on the artwork for further information.
The commission heard an update on a booklet cataloging some 49 paintings by Andrew A. Walsh. The first printing produced 50 copies with support from a county grant; the commission member leading the project said she is preparing a second edition with improved photo reproduction and added indexing. Commissioners discussed making copies available to schools and the library for educational use during the 250th celebrations and suggested outreach to the council to explore city sponsorship or funding of events or signage.
Commissioners also discussed Lenape archaeological material recovered during light-rail construction along the former Central Railroad right-of-way. The meeting record indicates artifacts were found at multiple digging sites and that one item of interest was a necklace recovered from a burial context; meeting participants said museum partners advised that burial items are sacred and should not be replicated for sale. Commissioners discussed photographing artifacts, producing replicas using library 3‑D printing for interpretive displays, and installing small kiosks at light-rail stations to present finds and context. The commission asked staff to solicit ideas from the historical society and the board of education and to forward proposals to city council members for possible coordination and funding.
No formal designations or funding decisions were made at the meeting; commissioners asked staff to bring detailed proposals and contacts to the December meeting for further discussion.
