Dallas Center-Grimes Community School District presented revised wellness regulations and a first reading of updated district wellness policy language following a triennial review.
District staff said the wellness policy itself required no substantive changes, but the wellness regulation was substantially reorganized to align with assessment tools and reporting requirements. The district said the triennial assessment exposed organizational weaknesses in prior documentation and that the regulation rewrite organizes goals and reporting expectations more logically.
Student members of the wellness committee described classroom and school ideas discussed by the committee, including expanding student garden programs to provide produce for classrooms or the cafeteria; short movement breaks between long instructional blocks (for example a five-minute yoga or walking break mid-class); and culturally themed food-service tasting events. District staff said these student-led suggestions helped shape the regulation recommendations.
District staff also said the district will increase partnership and communication with Chartwells (the district's food-service contractor), institute building-level self-assessments against the wellness goals, and expand stakeholder communications through the district website and the Mustang Monthly publication to meet state code notification requirements.
Board members thanked students for participating in the committee and accepted the first reading of the new regulation. District staff said more work is planned next year to translate policy into classroom- and building-level practices.
No final policy vote was taken at this meeting; the regulation was presented for first reading.
