Representatives of the Aina Paʻa youth wrestling team asked the Maui County Budget Committee for $30,000 to support travel to off-island competitions and to help secure a permanent facility for practices.

Coach and president Justin Uefalemana told the committee the team has about 35 participating youth and currently practices under temporary structures, sometimes in private yards, because a county gym is not always available. “We have 35 kids that we work out with,” he said, and described reliance on community fundraising, plate sales and concessions to cover travel costs to Maui, Oʻahu and mainland events.

Why it matters: Testimony emphasized youth development, educational outcomes and community supports. Parents described wrestling as providing leadership, opportunities to travel and motivation to pursue education. One youth wrestler said the team had become like family after relocating from Lahaina.

Committee members asked about fundraising and whether the county would permit concessions at an upcoming local tournament to help the team raise funds; speakers said community events do provide some income but the team still needs county support to cover expenses.

No formal vote or appropriation occurred during the hearing.
