Mayor Pro Tem Vanessa Fuentes presented a proclamation recognizing April 24 as OutWellness Day in Austin and praised OutWellness for providing weekly free trans-specific workouts and supportive space for the LGBTQ+ community.
Sid Young, founder of OutWellness, accepted the proclamation and used his remarks to describe the broader policy environment he said is affecting transgender people in Texas. “The anti trans legislation sweeping through our state isn't about protecting anyone. It's about controlling us,” Young said, calling out bills he said criminalize health-care referrals, limit access to gender-affirming care for youth and restrict participation in sports.
Fuentes introduced the proclamation by noting OutWellness “is a safe, affirming, and empowering space for [the] LGBTQ+ community” and highlighted that the program offers free weekly trans femme and transmasc workouts and had recently added a second transmasc session to meet demand.
The proclamation and remarks urged allies and local leaders to take visible, vocal action. Young framed the award as urgent, saying that “safe spaces don't build themselves. They take intention. They take action.” The transcript records these policy criticisms as remarks during the proclamation; no city ordinance or formal council action addressing state legislation was proposed or voted on in the recorded exchange.
The proclamation directs residents to continue supporting local inclusive services; it does not create new city policy or program funding in the recorded remarks.
