Thomas Daya, director of operations for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui, and Dan Yeager, West Area director, told the Budget Committee in Lahaina that the organization has continued serving youth across multiple sites after the August 2023 wildfire and seeks sustained county funding.
"Without Boys and Girls Clubs, thousands of youth, hundreds of youth a day, thousands of youth a year wouldn't have a safe, fun, and positive place to go," Thomas Daya said. He asked the committee to consider continued support and said the organization hoped for a 5% increase in county funding to keep pace with rising costs.
Dan Yeager described the organization's post‑fire operations — running programs from parks, hotels and school band rooms — and returning to the Lahaina Clubhouse in January with a public reopening in February.
Several youth members gave brief, personal testimonials about how the Lahaina clubhouse programming (esports, sports, Keystone leadership, and other activities) had helped them socially and academically. Youth speakers included Keeley WB, Noe DLG and Wendy Moore, who identified themselves as Lahaina Clubhouse members and described programs such as esports, volleyball, Keystone and other youth development activities.
Speakers emphasized the Club's role in workforce development, social‑emotional learning and mental‑wellness programming, and asked the council to preserve and protect existing county funding for youth services in West Maui.
