Resident alleges staff shared demeaning images of disabled students; requests investigation

During the community comment period of the May 27 special meeting, community member Danny Lawrence urged the board to investigate a staff text-message thread he says showed images and memes demeaning disabled students and alleged potential violations of student privacy laws.

Lawrence said he had seen a text thread among about 13 district staff that used images of disabled students “for sick and demeaning entertainment purposes” and that some images showed students in distress. He said parents were afraid to report the material to district administration and that the images may violate the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Colorado Student Data and Transparency Act. He asked the board to investigate the Integrated Services program at Fort Collins High School and said he would help families file FERPA complaints and CORA requests.

The board did not respond during the public-comment period, in keeping with its stated practice of not engaging in back-and‑forth during community comment. The board’s later business items did not include an explicit response or direction on Lawrence’s request during the meeting; the record shows the topic was raised publicly and the complainant said parents had provided him corroborating material.

Lawrence identified concern about long‑time employees and those who lead unified sports programs as among those named in the thread; he said parents would be contacted and offered assistance.
