Russ Durance, representing Alpha and the Alabama Farmers Federation, asked the Montgomery City Planning Commission on Oct. 9 to recommend renaming Capital Commerce Boulevard to Alpha Drive after Alpha relocates its headquarters to the former Capital Commerce Building on that street.
The request drew no objections in advance, Durance said, and a planning commission member moved to approve the renaming. Another member seconded the motion and the chair called the vote.
The commission followed standard public-notice procedures for street-renaming requests. Durance said the applicant had sent formal notice and had not received any responses opposing the change.
The commission’s rules presented at the start of the meeting note that street renaming requires a public hearing; following a hearing, the planning commission deliberates and renders a recommendation to the appropriate decision-making body. In this case, the commission treated the item as a renaming request and proceeded with the motion.
The transcript records that the motion to rename was moved and seconded and that the chair closed the discussion after calling for a vote; the transcript does not record a roll-call tally. The file for this item will move forward to the next step in the city’s administrative process for street-name changes.
