At the Oct. 23 Sierra Vista City Council meeting, the city manager reported a 2.73% increase in sales-tax revenue for August compared with the same month last year and provided several project and scheduling updates.

The city manager said the Buffalo Soldier Trail shared-use path pre-bid meeting is set for Oct. 31 and bids are due Nov. 21. Staff reported that requests for proposals for an employee health-benefits consultant were received and are under review. The Garden Avenue Streetscape project, originally targeted for completion in December, now has a target finish of March 2026; staff attributed the delay to utility-line issues.

Council members and staff also discussed recent recommendations from the school district. The transcript reported that Superintendent Terry Romo recommended closing Bella Vista Elementary School and the Rothery Center (the districts administrative services site). The city manager said the mayor and city manager met with Superintendent Romo and the city is moving forward with an appraisal to explore purchasing or leasing property on the south side of the Rotary Center with Fry Boulevard frontage; staff said a financial plan would be brought back to council if council wishes to pursue the acquisition during the next budget cycle.

Other announcements included Veterans Day closures: city offices will be closed Nov. 11 and Tuesday refuse pickup will shift to Wednesday that week; the Veterans Day parade and ceremony were noted to take place at Veterans Memorial Park on the Frederick Mueller Parade Field. The city manager also noted the next work session was moved to Monday, Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. and the next regular council meeting to Nov. 13 at 5 p.m. The manager also announced the retirement of Steve Semizic after nearly 44 years of city service.
