The Lake County board approved an update to the Lake County Library Collection Development Policy to affirm that the policy complies with the California Freedom to Read Act.
Director Christopher Veach told the board the changes add language recommended by the California State Library and that complying with the state law by Jan. 1, 2026, is important to remain eligible for state funding for the county library. "Complying with this state law by 01/01/2026 is important to continue being eligible for state funding for our library," Veach said.
Veach said the board previously approved the current collection development policy on Feb. 27, 2024, and the state library advised adding the highlighted language in the attached document to positively affirm compliance with the Freedom to Read Act. He recommended that the board approve the update.
A board member moved to approve the update and another board member seconded. The motion carried, 4-0. There were no public comments on the item during the meeting.
The approved change is limited to an update of the Lake County Library Collection Development Policy to include the language advised by the California State Library; Veach characterized the action as an affirmation of compliance rather than a broader revision of collection principles. The board did not provide additional directions to staff in the recorded discussion.
