Staff told the Middleton Landmarks Commission they submitted a letter of interest for the 2026 Certified Local Government grant cycle and are considering grant applications to prepare National Register nominations and design guidelines for potential historic districts. The city’s consultant on a historic resource survey has requested a short extension for family-health reasons and staff expects the survey completed in October.
Staff also reported progress updating tourism brochures and QR codes; marketing and tourism staff have been working with Rob to update wording and the QR code, and staff explained the commission will use a QR code solution to host longer informational content rather than reprinting costly brochures. The commission reiterated a plan to move a boulder and replace a plaque by May 2026; Dan Barker will provide wording for an informational panel he is preparing.
Staff reminded commissioners that a revised local landmarks ordinance and an alteration form are in progress and that the ordinance review is expected to be discussed in October by the relevant review body, with possible adoption in October or November depending on scheduling. Committee members added future agenda items, including a fuller discussion of racial covenants and an updated alteration form.
