United Nations humanitarian officials reported that deadly seasonal floods in Niger have affected hundreds of thousands of people and that relief resources remain extremely limited.
Farhan cited official Nigerien figures saying the rains affected some 550,000 people, with more than 120 deaths, nearly 55,000 houses destroyed and more than 10,000 acres of farmland flooded. He said humanitarian partners are supporting government‑led relief efforts but that funding is scarce.
The spokesperson said the response plan is “less than a fifth funded,” with $111,000,000 received so far; he did not provide a clear consolidated total requirement during the briefing. The UN called for additional pledges to support emergency response and recovery activities.
Why it matters: large displacement and loss of shelter, livelihoods and farmland create immediate needs for shelter, food, water and longer‑term recovery assistance.
UN agencies are mobilizing regional logistics hubs and prepositioned food and relief supplies, and the World Food Programme has been assisting people in the Caribbean and elsewhere to prepare for related weather events.
