Sierra Right, community prevention manager with the Johnson County Prevention and Recovery Coalition, told the board the "Spooktacular Safety Event and Drug Take Back Days" will take place Saturday at 9 a.m. in County Square. The county announced the event as a family-friendly, Halloween-themed morning with trick-or-treating, safety resources, crafts and visits from fire departments and apparatus.
Right thanked county staff and community partners, including Aletha Communities That Care and Jamie Shapp from her team, for planning the event. She said research shows that pro-social events like the Spooktacular safety event "help strengthen community connections and serve as protective factors against substance use." Right also advised the board that weather is being monitored; organizers expect to decide on a cancellation the following morning and will communicate changes via social media and the county's previously used promotion channels.
The event includes a drug take-back component and outreach by local prevention organizations; attendees were encouraged to wear costumes. Right said event organizers will use social media channels to notify vendors and the public of any cancellation. Commissioners thanked organizers and had no further questions.
