Milton School Committee members spent substantial time on Oct. 22 reviewing the FY27 budget philosophy and the district’s approach to longer‑range financial planning, and approved an appointment to the town budget coordination committee.
Assistant Superintendent/finance staff prepared a two‑page FY27 budget philosophy that the committee will post on the district website. Superintendent John Dale said the budget work is intended to align resources to the district’s instructional priorities: robust tier‑1 instruction, data‑informed practice, raising rigor with supports, targeted action for underperforming student groups and cultivating school climate. Dale said the district views this FY27 budget work as the start of a multi‑year budgeting approach to build predictability and sustainability.
The committee discussed revolving accounts, transportation funding and encumbrance reporting to improve predictability. Assistant Superintendent Katie Blake prepared a quarter‑one financial report that committee members described as detailed and helpful; the report will be posted to the district budget website.
As part of the meeting, the committee voted to appoint Robert Milt to the town Budget Coordination Committee as the additional School Committee representative. The committee moved and seconded the appointment and recorded the appointment as approved by voice vote.
Committee members noted upcoming outreach events: the finance subcommittee will present a school‑finance overview to the town warrant committee on Nov. 3, and capital requests for facilities and technology will be reviewed in subcommittee and coordinated with town timelines.
