Jose Morales, executive director, told the board on Dec. 19 that he completed a walkthrough of the organization’s facility and documented damage and accessibility problems that will require repairs and likely funding support.
The walkthrough focused on the first-floor spaces the organization uses; Morales said he found “signs of water damage in every room of the first floor” and humidity and evidence of roof leaks. He said he took multiple photos and would forward the photos and a written report to community development and to Marcela for follow-up.
The findings matter because the organization used the space for recent workshops, and Morales reported one participant who uses a wheelchair needed help up stairs. “We actually had to help her go up the stairs,” Morales said, adding the group will need a ramp or a lift near the main entrance to meet accessibility needs. Morales also said he had not observed mold in the walkthrough but noted holes and other exterior damage.
Board members asked whether the city or community development would cover repairs before the space is leased; a community development staffer responded that the organization must submit a written list of required repairs and supporting photos and that community development would then review and proceed. Morales said he would assemble the report and photos and send them to the named city contact for next steps.
The board did not take formal action at the meeting. The item ended with a plan for staff to supply the documentation needed to request assistance from community development.
Looking ahead, the organization will await community development’s guidance on eligibility and next steps after the submitted report and photos are reviewed.
