Town staff told the Traffic Safety Committee that the Select Board approved a heavy commercial vehicle (HCV) exclusion for Summer Street and that the Department of Public Works submitted the required narrative, cover letter and Select Board action to MassDOT on Dec. 16.

Scott Charpentier said the submission included caveats related to the nearby Route 20/Route 135 intersection and that District 3 sent recommendations to MassDOT headquarters in Boston; staff had not yet received a determination from MassDOT at the time of the meeting. Charpentier said he had contacted MassDOT earlier that day and expected a response — a denial, approval or conditional approval — by the committee’s next meeting.

No regulatory change is in effect until MassDOT issues its decision. The committee did not take a separate vote at this meeting; staff will report MassDOT’s response when it is received.
