Deerfield Beach commissioners urged residents to oppose a proposed expansion of the Monarch Hill landfill ahead of a county commission hearing set for January 28 (date given by commissioners). The city said it will provide transportation to the Broward County Commission chambers in Fort Lauderdale for residents who want to attend.

Commissioner Parnas and other commissioners described the planned expansion as a significant local concern and asked residents to email or call county commissioners and to appear in person. The commission advised making signs for the trip and noted the visual presence of residents can be effective at hearings.

At the dais officials reported they have received conflicting public statements from the landfill operator in past proceedings and warned residents to be prepared to speak and to coordinate messaging with neighboring jurisdictions (Coconut Creek and others) that share concerns.

The commission said the item’s time may be set late by the county and advised residents to monitor city communications for final timing and logistical details. The city manager confirmed a bus would be made available and suggested printed signs for the trip.
