The Tolland Board of Education voted unanimously Oct. 22 to designate a set of district items as obsolete or in disrepair and to transfer those items to the town under board policy 30-40.
The list presented included older technological equipment (nonworking monitors, an InFocus projector and a laminator) and multiple sets of outdated instructional books tied to an older curriculum program called "Journeys." Board members discussed that much instructional material is now electronic and that physical dictionaries and dated program books were no longer in use. The presenter said the town may sell, trash or redistribute the items; in past practice, some materials are placed in boxes for community members to take at town events or through library distribution, though no final disposition is specified in the board packet.
A motion to move the obsolete and surplus equipment list to board action was made and seconded, and during board action the motion to turn the identified items over to the town per policy 30-40 passed unanimously. The board noted that some items had been offered to families and that libraries sometimes receive older materials, but the final decision on reuse or disposal rests with the town.
