The Nantucket Finance Committee set its FY2026 budget review for Saturday, Feb. 1, from 8:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., and agreed that committee members should attend the full session. The committee assigned members to individual departments for detailed review and postponed several warrant discussions until related bodies weigh in.
The committee chair said a single Saturday session is the most efficient way to review multiple departmental budgets and asked that members not “step in and step out” but remain for the full meeting. Committee members agreed; several said they would participate remotely by Zoom if needed. Libby, the town administrator, confirmed town administration will provide schedules and supporting materials.
Assignments largely followed last year: the entire committee will review the general fund; Denise and Peter will cover the fire department; Chris and Joanna were assigned to police, harbormaster and emergency preparedness; DPW coverage will include Jeremy and Joe; Jill and Rob will review the water department; Joanna and Peter will review the solid waste enterprise fund; the island home enterprise fund will be reviewed by the chair and Rob; Steven and Jeremy will review the airport. The chair said a distribution of assignments will be circulated to members.
Committee members also agreed to postpone discussion of short‑term‑rental (STR) bylaw articles until after the planning board issues its zoning recommendations. Libby said the select board will discuss the warrant the following night, with likely focus on rental car, zoning and e‑bike articles; the select board will also act to adopt the warrant the following week. The committee noted capital program committee (CAPCOM) recommendations will be presented jointly to the select board and Finance Committee for review.
The committee confirmed its next meeting will be Thursday at 4 p.m., hybrid at Trailer Room A. The meeting adjourned by motion of Peter, seconded by Jill; the chair called the roll with all members voting aye.
