The Sunbury City Events and Commemorations Committee on Jan. 16 approved two upcoming disc‑golf events and reviewed requests and park needs for the growing recreational activity.
The committee voted to allow a tournament organized by the Olden TNG Disc Golf Club on April 19 from 2 to 4 p.m., and discussed the city’s role supporting the 35th annual “Columbus Ice Bowl,” a multi‑round, sanctioned PDGA event that will use several courses in the Columbus and central Ohio area, including Sunbury.
Committee members and staff emphasized that both events cleared reviews from police, fire and city services. Amber (staff member) told the committee the Olden TNG event is in its third year, charges $50 per person or $90 per team, and that collected fees are returned to participants as prizes and awards rather than retained by the sponsoring club. Amber said the Olden TNG event expects to place one tent and to hand out pizza to players at no charge. The club asked repeatedly about a brewery sponsorship; the committee declined a Nocturnal Brewing Company sponsorship but was told the organizer would continue to request approvals.
On the Ice Bowl, staff said the sanctioning body collects fees for PDGA registration and that event organizers collect additional donations and food contributions. The city confirmed it will have a portable toilet delivered by the end of the week to support upcoming disc‑golf events; staff said departments reported no red flags during review.
Committee members discussed recurring operational requests from disc‑golf groups — in particular, portable toilets, trash removal and course maintenance — and whether the city should plan for permanent or “hard” facilities if participation keeps growing. Mr. Cappell (committee member) raised the possibility of more permanent amenities as the sport expands. Another committee member noted recent volunteer work and course improvements: new tee pads and pavers to accommodate long tees, glow paint for night play, and an Eagle Scout project to add footbridges over wet areas.
Staff said clubs have shouldered much of the course maintenance, including replacing baskets and updating tee pads. Amber said the city has started placing an extra portable toilet at the park after repeated club requests and that organizers typically remove trash and boxes after events.
The discussion did not produce a city decision to fund permanent disc‑golf infrastructure; committee members asked staff to continue coordinating with parks staff and with volunteer groups and to track demand for future capital considerations.
Ending: The permits for the April tournament and the Ice Bowl were approved administratively after committee review; staff will confirm portable‑toilet placement and continue communications with club organizers and safety departments.
