The Pennsylvania House of Representatives observed a moment of silence Monday for Representative Matt Gergley and announced that a formal memorial will be scheduled on the House floor at the Gergley family's convenience, then suspended legislative business and adjourned until Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025, at 11 a.m.
The House convened Jan. 27 with the chamber’s presiding officer offering condolences to Gergley’s family and the 30 Fifth Legislative District in Allegheny County, and saying, “At a time that's convenient for the Gergley family, we will be having on the floor of this House a formal memorial service for Representative Gergley here in the House.” The House observed a moment of silence and Representative Curry offered a prayer before the Pledge of Allegiance.
The session included a series of committee reports submitted for the record. The chair of the committee on committees reported a writ for a special election for the 30 Fifth Legislative District that was filed with the office of the secretary of the Commonwealth on Jan. 21, 2025. The committee reports also recorded a resignation and a committee appointment: Mike Jones resigned as a member of the health committee, and Brad Roy was elected to the health committee. A separate committee report listed an election to the Intergovernmental Affairs and Operations Committee; the report was submitted by Representative Dan Miller as chair of the committee on committees.
Procedural steps taken during the brief session included postponing approval of the journal for Jan. 7, 2025, until it is printed, and conducting a master roll call. The clerk recorded that 202 members had voted on the master roll call and that a quorum was present. With no further formal business to be conducted while the House mourned Gergley, Representative Abney moved that the House adjourn until Jan. 28 at 11 a.m.; the motion was approved.
No roll-call votes were recorded on the bills and resolutions the committee chairs read into the record; those reports were presented as committee reports and not acted on before adjournment. The chairs who reported bills included Representative Schweier (Education), Representative Nielsen (Transportation) and Representative Briggs (Judiciary); the committee reports listed bill numbers but the House did not vote on them during the Jan. 27 session.
The House also introduced several guests in the gallery during the session, including the West Perry High School field hockey team and members of a Delaware Valley group of grandchildren of Holocaust survivors. The presiding officer thanked the guests but emphasized that no substantive business would proceed during the memorial proceedings.
The House is expected to reconvene and resume its agenda on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025, at 11 a.m., unless the speaker recalls members sooner.
