HB 2324, a bill to authorize continuation of recently established public transit services operating out of Warrenton and Front Royal, was laid on the table by the committee after a motion to table passed on the roll call.
Proponents told the subcommittee the routes were created after a private contractor ceased service during the pandemic and that the new service, begun in December, was developed in partnership with the Shenandoah Regional Commission and funded through the Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT). A presenter said the routes are already showing ridership increases and that some passengers previously traveled 35–40 miles just to access transit.
The bill prompted clarifying questions from committee members about whether another public provider already served the corridor; a committee member noted there was no other existing service following the contractor’s closure. The clerk recorded the motion to lay HB 2324 on the table and announced that the motion passed 53.
The record shows discussion about ridership growth and the routes’ role in reducing vehicle congestion and emissions on U.S. 29 and the I‑66 corridor, but no further formal action on the bill was taken at the hearing after the tabling vote.
