The HTC Sign Advisory Committee approved Feb. 4 a revised carved-and-painted sign for 66 Center Street, asking the applicant to add a white outline around the blue face to better frame the sign.
Applicant Garrison said the design matches two previously approved signs on other properties and is slightly smaller than those earlier approvals. "If it is small and we can't see it, I'll go back to the signmaker and just say, hey. If this isn't gonna work, we'll remove it," Garrison said, adding that the white border will match earlier approvals on Periwinkle and Martin House signs.
Board members agreed the design is appropriate but recommended a visible frame or an implied border to avoid a full-bleed contemporary look. Kevin Koester and others suggested the small byline may not be legible at 18 inches of sign height and questioned the necessity of the byline text.
Outcome: The committee approved the sign as filed with the condition that the applicant add a white border or implied outline on the face; the vote passed by roll call.
Next steps: Garrison will update the design to include the white border and confirm whether the small byline "by the Graydon House" is legible; if not, the applicant said it will be removed.
