Members reported multiple submerged wrecks and fuel tanks near Monomoy that pose hazard to dredges, anchors and recreational users; a detailed map and possible diver survey are planned for the Feb. 18 meeting.
The Harbor & Shellfish Advisory Board on Feb. 4 raised safety concerns about multiple submerged wreckage pieces off Monomoy that board members said have snagged anchors and could present a hazard to dredging and to boaters.
Board member Jim Sherwin will bring a map to the Feb. 18 meeting showing roughly five or six pieces of wreckage, including inboard motors and fuel tanks located east and west of the Monomoy piers. The chair said some pieces may be heavy and "may require two mooring haulers/barge to remove," and noted that removing hazards that include fuel tanks raises liability concerns.
Board members discussed hiring or contracting a survey: one member suggested hiring an experienced local contractor ("one of Owsley's guys") to conduct a survey and produce a removal plan. The board discussed the possibility of buoys or a diver survey to mark hazards quickly, but agreed final removal will require coordination and likely heavy equipment.
No formal vote was taken; the board scheduled further discussion and a map presentation when Sherwin appears in two weeks. Members emphasized safety for commercial and recreational users and the need to clarify who is responsible for removal and potential costs.
