The Rowan County School Board on Feb. 13 approved routine business items, accepted two agreements on the consent agenda, adopted an amended 2025-26 school calendar and agreed to postpone a decision about how to make up three 2024-25 snow days until its next meeting.
Board members first approved regular business items — previous meeting minutes, payment of monthly claims and the personnel report — by voice vote. The board then approved the consent agenda, which included an agreement with the Rowan County Sportsman's Club for the high school trap league and a memorandum of understanding for the Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) program.
Mr. Rowe described JAG as "a grant that stands for jobs for American graduates. This is a program that allows for a position to be funded through this grant that works with students and helps them find jobs in the workplace," and said the program focuses on students who plan to enter the workforce immediately after graduation.
On the 2024-25 calendar, Miss Sargent told the board a stakeholder survey was divided on how to make up three used snow days: 46.6% favored using some spring-break days while 45.3% wanted the days tacked on to the end of the year. The board voted to delay a final decision until next month to allow time for any potential changes at the state level (see next item), and the motion to defer passed by voice vote.
The board also approved an updated 2025-26 calendar to correct a technical error: instructional days were revised from 171 to 170, moving the final day of school one day earlier to May 21. The motion to accept the corrected calendar passed by voice vote.
