District staff told the board on Feb. 13 that the community schools grant supports an SEL coach at Clearfield Elementary and a student success coach at the high school who coordinates college and career activities.
Miss Gessler said the SEL coach is at Clearfield four days a week and at preschool one day a week to support social-emotional learning and behavior work. She said the student success coach, Emma, organizes college recruiters to visit the high school, led a college day in November and is planning a career day this spring; Emma also coordinates one-on-one meetings and college visits for students.
Gessler said the district has scheduled free vision screenings for all third graders on March 14, to be conducted by second-year optometry students from the University of Pikeville. The screenings will produce individual reports for each student; family resource staff will follow up with families of students who fail the screen to help arrange appointments or transportation to local optometrists.
Gessler and district staff also said that seniors will participate in an "adulting day" coordinated by staff and that a group of freshmen will visit Morehead State University and MCTC in March for campus visits. Carver, Gessler and a community member will travel to Anaheim, California, for a Prichard Committee event about community schools later in the month.
The board received the update as part of ongoing implementation of the community schools grant.
