At a Friday session of the House of Representatives, members agreed to adjourn in memory of former Representative Mary Ann Stevenson after being told she died early that morning.
Representative Oliver, the member from Montgomery, told colleagues he had received the news from Senator Chasenal and moved "that the entire House be signed on to an adjournment in memory today, and that we reach out to their family and express our sympathies." The motion was accepted and the House agreed to adjourn in her memory; members were told they could opt out of being listed by visiting the clerk’s office.
Representative Holloway, the member from Kapaa, told the chamber he was "deeply saddened" and described Stevenson as "a wonderful lady" he had the opportunity to serve with. Members also noted that a bill passed the previous day had named a building at the Fire Academy in her honor.
Separately, the House approved a procedural motion that it stand adjourned until 4 p.m. Monday. The motion was made by the gentleman from Rankin and carried by voice vote.
The House dispensed with the reading of the journal earlier in the session by a motion from Representative Powell of Rankin, and conducted routine introductions and announcements before the memorial adjournment was moved.
Members did not record a roll-call tally in the transcript for the memorial adjournment; the clerk will add members’ names to the adjournment resolution unless they notify the clerk to be removed.
