Family resource and community-schools staff told the Rowan County School Board about December service volumes, plans for vision screenings and college/career activities.
Miss Gessler, reporting on family resource and youth service centers, provided December figures: centers distributed 312 weekend snack packs, logged 298 family contacts (in-person or phone), made 16 home visits and served 310 families through holiday-assistance programs. She said holiday assistance includes food baskets, donated gift cards and angel-tree style efforts coordinated with community partners.
"Sometimes we lose sight of that because we know that they're doing great things," Miss Gessler said, describing the centers’ role in connecting families with needed items and services.
In a related community-schools update, staff said the district’s SEL coach is working at Clearfield Elementary four days per week and preschool one day per week. Student-success coach Emma at the high school coordinates college recruiters, runs college and career days and organizes college visits for underclassmen. On March 14, University of Pikeville second-year optometry students will provide free vision screenings for all third graders; the district said follow-up support will be offered to families when students fail the screening.
Staff also said members of the district team — including Miss Carver and community member Edna Shatt — will attend a Prichard Committee trip to Anaheim, California, paid by the committee, to observe community-school models.
