The Senate Education Committee on Feb. 14 unanimously recommended House Bill 228, a measure to make a student’s immunization-exemption form valid statewide so parents are not required to file a new exemption each time a child changes schools within Utah.
Representative Karianne Lisonbee told the committee the bill “removes the requirement for a parent when a child moves schools within a district to redo the immunization exemption form,” and makes the form apply statewide so families do not have to repeat the paperwork each year when a child transfers schools.
Supporters said the change preserves school awareness of exemption status while reducing administrative burden on parents. Committee members did not raise clarifying questions, no public commenters came forward, and Senator Wilson moved the committee recommendation. The committee chair called the vote unanimous.
No statutes, funding changes, or exemptions beyond the procedural change were specified during the committee discussion. The committee returned the bill to the full Senate with a favorable recommendation.
The committee did not record extended debate or amendments to HB 228 during the session.
