Joe Turman was re-elected chair of the Floyd County Board of Supervisors during the board’s 2025 reorganization meeting, and supervisors voted to set the 2025 chair and vice-chair terms to run from Jan. 2, 2025, through Jan. 5, 2026.
Board members said the short, one‑time adjustment is intended to avoid a lapse in signatory authority or leadership when the calendar and holiday schedule would otherwise leave no sitting chair at midnight on Jan. 1. “I will say upfront that I had to do a lot of soul searching in the last 2 or 3 months whether or not I wanted to continue,” Turman told colleagues after his re-election, and added he would “take it 1 year at a time.”
The board first debated setting the term window for 2025 to run from Jan. 2 through Jan. 5, citing the way holidays fall this year. A motion to set that term period carried on a roll call vote. Supervisors then moved to re-elect Turman as chair; the roll-call vote on the re-election recorded four votes in favor and one no vote, and Turman accepted the office.
The board’s vice-chair position was also filled: Jerry Booth was nominated and elected to remain vice-chair for the same Jan. 2, 2025–Jan. 5, 2026 term. Supervisors noted the change to the term window was a narrow, calendar‑driven adjustment and said they would revisit term start and end dates in future reorganizations as needed.
The clerk recorded the roll-call votes for both motions during the meeting.
Looking ahead, Turman said he planned to serve for one more year and review the county’s priorities with fellow supervisors before deciding on future service.
