On Feb. 27 the Lynn School Committee approved the 2025-26 school calendar, with a minor amendment to reflect the correct last day for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students.
Deputy Superintendent Miss Ruggiero reviewed the calendar with committee members. She noted that pre-K and kindergarten begin three days after the district's first student day and end three days before the rest of students; the committee approved a correction so the calendar will show pre-K/k last day as June 17. The calendar moves some half days away from a single weekday to be more inclusive of families' religious observance schedules, according to the deputy superintendent and the superintendent.
Superintendent Dr. Alvarez said the district reduced professional-development days this year from five to two because the extra PD days in the prior contract were paid from ESSER funds. The proposed calendar includes two PD days (the day before school begins and a day in November). Committee members also discussed a two-week winter break (Dec. 22'Jan. 2 in the proposed calendar), and staff said the calendar now includes five snow days that could extend the school year through Jan. 20 if fully used.
A motion to adopt the 2025-26 calendar (with the pre-K/k correction) passed on a roll call: Member Castellanos, Member Dugan, Member Gaitley, Member Pena, Member Reid, Member Satterwhite, and Mayor Nicholson voted yes.
Staff said the union had reviewed and approved the calendar and that a corrected version would be distributed to the community after the committee's vote.
