Library director Jennifer Bruno told trustees that the Northborough Library has been approved to access LanguageLine Solutions through the Massachusetts (MAS) library system, which will allow staff to connect patrons with live human translators in many languages.
Bruno said the LanguageLine approval changed the library’s needs for an additional phone line. She explained the library had been considering using a laptop app for translation but now wants a solution that allows privacy for patrons using the translation service; that could include a separate phone or a dedicated device. Bruno said staff are returning to the drawing board to identify the best option and that they hope to have the service and the supporting phone solution in place soon.
Trustees also heard that the library’s new audio‑visual equipment installation is nearly complete; Bruno said the system installation reduced echo and that the next in‑person trustee meeting, scheduled for April 8 at 7 p.m., will be held in the library and will use the AV system. Bruno reminded trustees that a judge will be the guest speaker for an upcoming judicial program and encouraged trustees to attend.
Other items in Bruno’s director report included a warning to the long‑range planning committee that she will contact members soon to schedule a meeting. Trustees thanked staff who contributed to the director’s report and praised individual staff members for their contributions.
Bruno’s remarks identify the next steps: staff will finalize the phone/translation setup, launch LanguageLine access once logistics are resolved, and use the installed AV equipment at the next in‑person meeting.
