The Hendry County School Board recognized several district programs and student achievements during its April meeting, highlighting a family engagement day, LaBelle High School’s band trip to Nashville and Special Olympics medalists.
District staff member (family engagement) Miss White and her team organized a family engagement day at Behrend Park that drew “hundreds and hundreds of families and students,” according to remarks at the meeting. The event featured community resource tables, a SWAT demonstration, a canine demonstration, entertainment including cloggers and student performances, food trucks and activities for children.
Isabella, a LaBelle High School student who plays French horn, told the board the band scored 96.83 out of 100 during a recent contest in Nashville and performed at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center and recorded at Studio B. School officials and board members praised the students’ conduct and the band director’s leadership.
Crystal Rodriguez, coordinator for Special Olympics in the district, said 13 students from district schools attended area games in February and all medaled: five first-place finishes, five second-place, two third-place and one fourth-place finish. Rodriguez said five athletes advanced to state competition, and named individual placements during the presentation.
Board members applauded the volunteers, staff and students who organized and participated in the events.
The recognitions were presented during the meeting’s opening remarks and required no board action.
