Springfield officials at a special meeting approved overnight and out-of-district field trips for several Springfield Public Schools, including a May 12–14 overnight farm trip for Mary A. Bryan Veterans Memorial Elementary School and a May 30 acapella competition for Chelmsford High School.
The approvals came as district staff described the elementary trips as opportunities for social-emotional learning (SEL), hands-on agricultural experiences and team-building. A district staff member presenting the elementary trip materials said, "The students will be learning about SEL, which is social emotional learning, as well as agricultural learning and engage in team building activities that will extend beyond their time at [school] and reach into their lifetime as lifelong learners." The staff member also noted that two presenters listed on the agenda, Emily Ramos and Theresa Carey, were unable to join because of Zoom technical difficulties.
Administrators said the Mary A. Bryan Veterans Memorial Elementary School excursion is planned to depart May 12, 2025, and return May 14, 2025, to a farm in Asheville referenced in the meeting materials as "Redgate Farms." The transcript also refers to the destination later as "Redding Farms;" that inconsistency is noted in the meeting record. The trip packet described classroom-linked activities in agriculture and SEL; the packet is part of the recorded materials on file with the district.
Officials also approved a farm-based, hands-on learning trip for students of Esperanza (listed under district materials) and authorized Chelmsford High School students to attend a May 30 acapella competition in North Chelmsford, Mass. Superintendent Dr. Denholm spoke in support of the high school trip, describing the Conservatory students' recent competitive success and saying the group had finished in the top 10 in the Northeast in an invitation-only competition.
Each trip item was approved by roll call. For the elementary farm trip(s) roll call showed: Gonzales — yes; Attorney Murphy — absent; Collins — absent; Gresham — absent; Hurst — yes; Monroe Naylor — yes; Mayor Sarno — yes. A similar roll call was recorded for the Chelmsford High School item (Gonzales — yes; Attorney Murphy — absent; Collins — absent; Gresham — absent; Hurst — yes; Monroe Naylor — yes; Mayor Sarno — yes). The motions to approve were recorded as passed.
Meeting presenters and some agenda-listed presenters were not able to speak in person because of technical issues; the transcript notes that Emily Ramos and Theresa Carey were listed to answer questions but were unable to join via Zoom. The meeting record shows limited discussion beyond proponents describing the educational goals of the trips; no funding sources, costs per student, chaperone ratios or transportation providers were specified in the spoken record.
District staff and meeting minutes will contain the full trip packets and any required parental permission and risk-management documents for the approved overnight and out-of-district activities.
