The Northborough Youth Commission agreed to pursue outreach to fill two open seats after approving its goals at the April 22 meeting.
The commission discussed recruitment channels — including social media posts, town department accounts, word‑of‑mouth, school contacts and tabling at community events such as the summer concert series — and settled on a direct, flexible approach. Members agreed a draft flyer would be produced and brought back to the commission for review rather than circulated before approval.
Why it matters: Filling the two vacancies will restore the commission to seven members and broaden representation from different age groups and family backgrounds, which commissioners said would help the group reach middle‑school families and other underrepresented voices.
Chair Erica Ziger described the opening as a two‑seat recruitment; members suggested outreach through personal networks, school guidance counselors and community groups. Liz (department staff) offered to include the announcement on the Health and Human Services Instagram and to help circulate a flyer once it is approved by the commission.
Members discussed whether individual commissioners may post recruitment notices on their personal accounts and agreed to confirm rules with the town clerk and staff. The group agreed that commission members could post brief notices linking to the official application and that staff would check whether department accounts may post directly to local Facebook groups; if department posts are not allowed in a given group, individuals could re‑post content themselves.
Commissioners identified likely outreach venues and events for tabling: the be well fair, summer concert series, and International Night at the high school. The commission decided not to finalize a flyer for immediate town meeting distribution because of timing; members may work on a draft and present it for approval at the next meeting.
The chair asked commissioners to spread the word informally and to provide the finalized flyer at a future meeting for formal approval. The commission also discussed whether high‑school youth liaisons must complete an application; staff will confirm the process and share any forms with commissioners.
Next steps: staff will prepare a flyer for review, confirm social media posting rules with the town clerk, and circulate the finalized goals and recruitment language with the minutes.
