House Resolution 30, sponsored by Representative Butler, designates the city of Opelousas as the 'horse capital' of Louisiana; supporters highlighted the parish's equine industry, Evangeline Downs and plans for a museum and industry expansion.
The committee reported House Resolution 30 favorably to name the City of Opelousas the "horse capital of Louisiana."
Representative Butler, sponsor of the resolution, said Opelousas has a long equine heritage and cited local assets including Evangeline Downs and plans to develop a championship museum. "We would like to see us move forward," Butler said, adding that local equine projects and historical downtown credits factor into the plan.
Daniel Lyons of Church Point gave a cultural and historical account to the committee during the presentation, describing Louisiana's rodeo and rodeo champions and urging the committee to showcase the state's equine industry. ‘‘What I'm here today to talk about is the horse industry and the sleeping giant of Louisiana,’’ Lyons said.
Representative Zorang moved the resolution favorably; no objections were recorded and HR30 was reported favorably.
