Andrew Gruberg, WFRC executive director, and staff previewed an interactive map tab labeled SLC 2034 in the Wasatch Choice vision portal and walked committee members through planned and existing transportation investments that will intersect with Olympic venues.
Gruberg said the map shows venues across Salt Lake City, Park City, Snowbasin and Provo and lets users toggle transportation layers to compare current infrastructure with planned projects. He noted the proximity of venues to the central core and said that is one reason Utah was awarded the Games.
Ben Withrowicz and other staff highlighted projects shown on the map that are already built or planned, including FrontRunner double‑tracking work to improve reliability, bus rapid transit corridors in the Central Valley and Park City, continued improvements to Mountain View Corridor and major interchange and roadway rebuilds. Withrowicz said many of the projects on the map are planned but not yet fully funded, and that the region’s ongoing capital program advances transportation improvements regardless of the Olympics.
"One of the reasons that our area was selected for the Olympics is because we have the infrastructure in place largely to serve the Olympics," Gruberg said. "But the question is what’s happened since 2002, and what’s going to happen between now and 2034?"
Staff invited Transcom members to a broader WFRC council meeting scheduled for the following week, where members of the U.S. Olympic Committee were expected to participate in a deeper discussion about transportation preparation.
The map and related materials are available on the Wasatch Choice website; WFRC staff said they intend to use the tab to coordinate planning and to demonstrate how planned projects will improve access to venues as the region prepares for major events.
