Student leaders presented an update on Associated Student Body (ASB) funding and asked the board to consider restoring a mandatory student ASB fee after two years of optional sticker sales produced very low participation.
The student presentation said that in 2019, 686 students paid a mandatory $30 ASB fee, generating $20,550 for student activities. After the fee was removed and an optional $35 sticker was offered, revenue fell: the presentation recorded $8,155 in 2023 and $4,235 in 2024, with only 21 students purchasing the sticker this year. "Since the fee became optional, funding has been unpredictable. We can't rely on the ASB sticker to cover our finances," the student representative told the board.
Students said the fee supports free admission to home events, reduced dance ticket prices, club access to funds, and other year‑round activities; they asked the board to consider options so events and clubs are sustainable. Board members questioned whether students had polled the broader student body; the students said they had raised the issue in leadership and club meetings but had not surveyed the entire student body, and they agreed to conduct a schoolwide survey.
Board members said the district previously removed the mandatory fee to reduce barriers to participation and called the current shortfall an unintended consequence. One board member suggested meeting with ASB leadership and district staff to explore options and noted that the counseling office will consider students' financial need and provide fee waivers where appropriate.
Ending: The board offered to meet with ASB leaders and school administration to discuss next steps and requested a broader survey of student opinion before taking any board action.
