Members of the Supreme Court of Louisiana Historical Society updated the Civil Law and Procedure Committee on educational events and exhibits marking the bicentennial of the 1825 Civil Code.
Skip Phillips, Phelps Gay and Alan Brackett described a year-long statewide commemoration featuring lectures by civil-law scholars, a traveling exhibit for schools and libraries, and a June 20 gala at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. Gay said recordings and essays, including a symposium by Professor Ron Scalise of Tulane, will be preserved by Loyola Law School after the events conclude.
Phelps Gay said the society is a nonprofit formed to research, promote and preserve the Supreme Court of Louisiana’s history and the civil-law tradition. Alan Brackett described the project as a "legislative celebration" and said the society focused on materials that could be used by schools. Committee members thanked presenters and said they welcomed invitations.
This portion of the meeting functioned as an informational briefing and did not involve committee action.
