IRVING, Ky. — The Estill County Board of Education approved revisions to district police department policies at its May 15 meeting to maintain eligibility for a state‑approved funding program that helps cover officer pay.
The board heard that the policy updates are required to secure an annual payment tied to the state program; the presenter said the program pays “up to $4,000 a year” that can be applied to district officers as long as the required policies are in place and state approval continues.
District staff described the vote as an update, not a wholesale reorganization. “This is just kind of an update, to address those policies or to change them the way they wanted them changed,” Jeremy Brock, staff member, told the board. Brock said the funding stream has historically been available and the changes align district policy with state expectations.
Tammy Hardy moved to approve the policy updates and Sheila Samples seconded. The board approved the update by a 4‑0 voice vote.
The board did not read policy text or itemize which policy sections were changed during the public meeting; administration said the changes were consistent with the state program’s requirements and that funding availability has been stable in prior years.
Any future changes to policies or the funding program would be brought back to the board for action.
