The New Rochelle Municipal Civil Service Commission on Oct. 22 returned a job specification submitted by the Board of Education for a "theater director," saying the role appears to involve direct student supervision and therefore should be classified under school personnel rather than the municipal civil service's non-school category.
A commissioner who reviewed the job specification said, "there is supervision and interaction and also some educating of students. So therefore, I think this really should go under school personnel." The comment led the commission to agree to ask the Board of Education to submit the position under teacher/school personnel rules and to seek guidance from the State Civil Service if needed.
A staff member said they would notify the Board of Education of the commission's view and, if necessary, request guidance from the state. The staff member said they would forward any reply from the Board of Education to the commission and would communicate updates by email.
There was no formal vote recorded to approve the specification as submitted. The commission recorded the direction to return the document to the Board of Education for reclassification and to consult State Civil Service guidance as required.
The item was discussed as part of the commission's agenda and arose during the staff report/department items. The commission did not adopt the job specification or set hiring steps for the role at this meeting.
