Dunn County accepted a county-specific Safe Streets for All traffic safety action plan during the May 14 meeting. Staff explained the plan was prepared under a multi-county Safe Streets for All grant and that the county’s plan focuses on local crash data, high-injury network mapping and a menu of countermeasures.
According to the presentation, consultants compiled five years of crash data (2019–2023), identified high-injury segments and intersections, and proposed prioritized, evidence-based countermeasures ranging from signage and chevrons to shoulder widening and intersection reconfiguration. The plan is intended to support applications for state and federal safety funding and to guide a five-year implementation and monitoring cycle.
Staff noted the plan includes lower-cost treatments (chevrons, improved signing and limited shoulder work) and higher-cost options (guardrail, culvert replacement, intersection work and, in rare cases, roundabouts). The committee emphasized that the plan provides a data-driven basis for prioritizing safety investments and for preparing project applications under programs such as the Highway Safety Improvement Program.
Committee members asked about review cadence; staff said the plan will be revisited on a multiyear cycle and used as a living document for grant applications and capital planning. The committee voted to adopt the traffic safety action plan by voice vote.
Staff will post the plan and an interactive map for public review and said they will use the plan to prioritize safety elements as design work proceeds on corridors such as County Road D.
