Students from the Somers Central School District’s middle school bands performed a concert that featured sixth-grade, jazz and seventh- and eighth-grade ensembles and included public acknowledgments of staff and graduating eighth-graders, according to the event transcript.
The event included routine safety and logistics announcements, thank-yous to school staff and volunteers, and recognition of students who participated in regional music activities. “Good evening, everyone, and thank you for coming to our wonderful band concert this evening,” a school staff member said in opening remarks, according to the transcript.
School staff reminded the audience of fire exits located behind the auditorium and at the sides of the front, asked attendees to silence cell phones and said the concert program could be accessed by scanning QR codes around the auditorium. The staff member also thanked custodial staff and referenced the Board of Education, STARS and “Mr. LaFever” for supporting the music programs.
Performances named in the transcript included student pianists Charlie and Bert, a solo by Kara Goodwin and a clarinet concerto in B-flat performed by Derek Sheldon (identified in the transcript as a multi-movement piece). The sixth-grade band performed a piece identified as “Frenzy and Fire Dance,” which the announcer described as “especially challenging because of its many time signature and mood changes.” The transcript lists several jazz-band selections and concludes with a combined seventh- and eighth-grade set that included a finale and a cover of “Don’t Stop Believin’.”
The program also recognized students who participated in regional ensembles; the transcript calls for NISMA and “all county” participants to stand. Ahead of the seventh- and eighth-grade performance, a staff member asked eighth-graders to stand to mark their upcoming graduation next month.
At the end of the event, staff gave logistical instructions for students and families to gather in the lobby and thanked the audience for attending. One staff member closed by telling attendees to “Get home safe, everyone,” per the transcript.
No formal votes, policy actions or references to statutes or district resolutions were made during the portions of the event captured in the transcript.
