Central Visual and Performing Arts High School presented a posthumous diploma to the family of senior Alexandria Bell during the school's commencement ceremony.
School officials described an empty chair placed at the ceremony as a symbol of Bell’s absence and the community’s loss. “We honor Alexandria today and always,” the school presenter said when announcing the diploma, and the diploma was presented to Bell’s mother, Shonta Acres.
The announcer said Bell was taken from the community in “a tragic and senseless act of violence” two years earlier and that the diploma recognizes her work and talent. The school asked the family to accept the diploma as a symbol of Bell’s dedication and the community’s support.
At the same ceremony, Gary Anselman came forward to certify the graduating class. “I hereby certify that the following students have completed the requirements of the Saint Louis Public Schools and the state they deserve for high school graduation,” Anselman said while certifying diplomas on behalf of the district.
The presentation of a posthumous diploma was ceremonial and did not include any formal board action recorded in the ceremony.
