A Woburn resident asked the Traffic Commission for special signage to alert drivers near 109 Green Street that her three young children are autistic and may not recognize hazards.
Irish Jackson, who said she lives at 109 Green Street and cares for three 3‑year‑old triplets with autism, asked for a warning sign near her home “to slow them down a little bit there” and said she has fenced her yard and obtained medical documentation but remains concerned about her children escaping the yard and encountering traffic.
Commissioners discussed whether the sign is MUTCD-compliant and whether the Commission on Disability should review the request. Planning staff reported a search returned a federal MUTCD code listed as W40‑7 for an autism-related warning sign. Commissioners voted to ask DPW to research and, if appropriate, to install an MUTCD‑compliant sign in both directions near 109 Green Street within approximately 100 feet, but first to seek input from the Commission on Disability.
Because the Traffic Commission will not meet again until September, commissioners also approved a motion authorizing DPW to proceed with installation if the Disability Commission endorses the sign and DPW confirms MUTCD compliance, so the request would not be delayed by the recess. Staff pledged to notify the petitioner of next steps and to post project updates on the city website.
